Milford Sound/Piopiotahi

Andrew was appointed Operations Manager for what was formerly the Milford Sound Development Authority (MSDA, now known as Milford Sound Tourism or MST) in 2008 and was tasked with undertaking the redevelopment of Freshwater Basin Harbour at Milford Sound.

The refurbishment of Freshwater Basin Harbour was essential in maintaining Milford Sound/Piopiotahi as the icon visitor destination for New Zealand; this was a complex project involving dredging and disposal in a marine reserve as well as undertaking a major redevelopment  in a world heritage area.

Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, Andrew worked with a variety of consulting engineers (including marine, civil and project management specialists) as well as landscape/consenting professionals and contractors. The redevelopment was delivered under budget in 2012 and principal project engineers Hadley Consultants won the Silver Award of Excellence at the ACENZ Innovate NZ Awards, 2014 for this project.

Chaffers Marina Wellington

In 2018 Andrew  accepted the role of General Manager for Chaffers Marina in Wellington.  Chaffers Marina is Wellington’s premier ‘deep water’ marina that caters for vessels up to 20 metres in length located in the heart of Wellington city. The marina was opened in 1993 and by 2018 was reaching the end of its useful life. Andrew was responsible for developing a  Long Term Plan (LTP), based on previous meetings with shareholders, to ensure that Chaffers Marina continued to operate as Wellington’s premier marina facility; maintaining the value of the shares held by shareholders and continuing to offer a friendly and sociable atmosphere to the marina stakeholders.

The LTP for Chaffers Marina focused on 5 key areas:

  • a works programme (repair/renew/replace) of marina assets for the period 2019 – 2034

  • capital expenditure estimates for the works to be carried out for the duration of the LTP - value $9,200,000

  • projected cash flow highlighting peak surplus/deficit

  • licence fee, asset management fee and berth rental fee increases for the duration of the LTP

  • a ‘one off’ shareholder capital payment based on berth size/shareholding (including repayment period)

A special General Meeting of shareholders was held in March 2019; an ensuring vote resulted in overwhelming support to undertake the programme. Contract works started in April 2019 and are forecasted to continue until 2034. The works include new piles (steel, 18m x 500mm). sleeving the existing piles (210 piles), refurbishment/replacement of the fixed walkways, wavescreens and reticulated utilities (power and water) and replacement of the 165 floating berths.
